Scenario: going down a two way street with on street parking. Pedestrian at far crosswalk, walk sign blinks. I stop in middle of intersection to let pedestrian cross. Big black tahoe pulls right around me to go buy, then has to stop to let pedestrian cross. I’m guessing he thought I was turning left considering I was in the middle of my lane and did not have my fully functional turn indicator indicating for any type of turn.

People do shit like this all the time in my town, I think it is very dangerous and maybe illegal, since there no second lane.

I’ve also seen this when there are two cars turning left against each other, the offending passer would presumably collide with the left turner who would not be expecting a car coming around another car since there is only one driving lane.

Rant over.

Point for infractions:

2 Right of way violation - failure to yield to pedestrian

2 Overtaking vehicle stopped at crosswalk

That’s why it is, in fact, illegal.

Why didn’t you just speed up to block him and have him stomp on the brakes to avoid hitting the parked car?

Wait... It’s my “asshole Mexico City driver” brain talking.

yeah, boo illegal

Because if I did that I would run over a pedestrian. That is kind of why I stopped in the first place.

out of curiosity, why didn’t you stop before entering intersection to let pedestrian cross?

I kid, sometimes the cars do stop here too....

It was probably a timing thing and that would make sense if I had seen the person a ways out and anticipated which direction they were going. But I bet in this case there was not enough time/distance to stop without excessive braking.

And if I’m being honest If a person is at the far cross walk I will sometimes stop in the middle of intersection to stop people from turning right or left into the ped. because those people may think I’m being nice and letting them into traffic.

To be perfectly clear, the Tahoe fucked up, I’m just thinking of ways this would’ve happened in Mexico City. I’ve seen some really crazy shit. Like a guy using a pedestrian crossing to make a U turn in a six lane road with a meridian.

Thinking that you were turning left without signaling is NOT a good enough excuse for passing here. A lack of a signal IS a signal itself, telling others that you are NOT turning or merging. He has no right to assume otherwise.

Was there lights at the crosswalk?

Generally you never stop inside a junction unless you are turning, that said, the other road users to your rear should never assume the road ahead is clear or that you are just turning left unless your indicators are lit and you are in a position it the road to make the turn (ie in the first 50% of the junction box).

Sounds like the person ‘under-taking’ you is an a-hole and the city shouldn’t put a crosswalk so cross to a junction without traffic lights.

That’s one way of thinking.

Another is that you are now blocking the intersection. If an emergency vehicle appeared out of nowhere, they would not be happy with you.

I get it. Pedestrian could not be seen in time and that’s what happened. I am not blaming you. Was just curious.

Yeah, dick move, but in places like Chicago, it’s pretty common practice to blow around cars that you *assume* are turning right - and in some parts of the city it’s actually a necessity to keep traffic moving during busy times.

Not much you can do about it, except try to slide right a little bit in order to block asshats from doing what the Tahoe did.

I hope to hell you got moving quick enough after the ped crossed to keep the Tahoe behind you - or, better yet, he realized his idiocy and let you go ahead.

I was making a right on green at a somewhat busy intersection and had to wait for a pedestrian crossing. The car behind me got aggravated thinking I was dawdling, tried to go around and almost hit said pedestrian. Yes, may drivers are oblivious, but sometimes they can see things you can’t.

Can I ask why you would stop for a pedestrian that hadn’t started crossing? Seems like a good way to get bumperhumped.

If they HAD started crossing, the asshole in this situation is the pedestrian. Right of way=/=being able to wander across traffic whenever they feel like it.

Only crosswalk lights, not a signaled intersection. You don’t always have time to stop at the far point of the intersection for a pedestrian but I’d rather stop awkward than get a ticket from our local police. I think in MT a failure to yield to a ped. is $500.

Montana has very strict pedestrian protection laws, if you see someone who is waiting to cross a street, especially one like this with a cross walk and a blinking ped sign you fucking stop right now or you are getting a ticket.

As the ped was walking I was giving Tahoe driver major evil eye. He didn’t move until I started moving and was in front of him. He saw the error of his ways.

There’s a crosswalk on a really busy street at my college campus in downtown Indy. I’ll admit I get a little bold and basically dare the oncoming cars to either hit me or stop. I think I could handle a 10mph collision (the key is to end up on their hood, for added shock value), and I’d potentially get a decent amount of money out of it.

Ye’, definitely both points stand, failure by the other road user to check their exit was clear, and failure by the city to make the crosswalk suitably safe for pedestrians and other road users.

I see that near daily in Alameda. Lots of pedestrians, and lots of really slow and indecisive drivers. I’ve opened my car door before to block a car that didn’t see the person (already in a wheelchair) that I had stopped for. That said, I’ve concluded nobody looks past the rear bumper off whatever they’re behind anyway.

In TX, you have no obligation to stop for a pedestrian standing on the curb, even if there is a blinking ped xing sign. Once they are in the crosswalk, though, you must stop (duh). In fact, once they have cleared your half of the road, you can proceed across the crosswalk. You don’t have to wait for them to clear the street.

I would not have stopped in this situation. Too dangerous. This is also how pedestrians get killed.

Kindly stop. That’s idiotic.

Also, does the crosswalk have lights? If it does, start taking numbers of cars that don’t stop. If it doesn’t, it needs them. In either case, please stop playing chicken.

I added some google images to the post so you can see the intersection. Now that I look at it, it is not very well laid out for ped. crossing.

In Texas pedestrians carry 45's and routinely shoot drivers.

Did I get this right?

Ye’, there are a few of rules here in the U.K., don’t enter a junction unless the exit is clear and green doesn’t mean go, it means proceed if clear to do so, and don’t ever overtake on a junction or under-take unless the other road user has clearly indicated their intention to turn across oncoming traffic.

With having the crossing so close to the junction it should be a four way traffic light junction.

If the crossing was moved further down away from the junction, it would not need traffic lights and be more visible to all road users and other road users intentions would be more apparent.

But yeah, no matter how you look at it, the other road user from your rear is an a-hole.

Right enough. Fun fact: If you go to the Texas Capitol building, you have to pass through a metal detector when you enter. However, if you have a concealed carry license, you don’t. You just have to show your license.
